Tinnitus and Hearing Loss

Tinnitus can be described as the ringing, buzzing, humming, hissing or roaring sounds that an individual hears when no external sound is present. Occasionally the sound can be measured when a microphone is placed in the ear canal.

According to the American Tinnitus Association, about 12 million Americans suffer from severe tinnitus and occasional tinnitus is even more common.

Most cases of tinnitus are probably the result of cochlea hair cell or auditory nerve pathology. Specific causes include hypertension, ototoxic drugs (including fairly high levels of aspirin), noise, physical trauma, Meniere’s disease, acoustic neuroma and even impacted ear wax. (cerumen)

There is a strong relationship between tinnitus and hearing loss: About 20% of patients with hearing loss complain of tinnitus and about 90% of patients with severe tinnitus have hearing loss.

Depending on the severity of the tinnitus and the person’s response to the tinnitus, treatment may include audiologic evaluation. The purpose of the audiologic evaluation is to identify any co-existing hearing loss and to determine the nature and extent of the hearing loss. This information is helpful in determining possible treatment plans.

Your hearing is very important and you deserve professional service from an Audiologist. If you are suffering from tinnitus or other hearing disorders, give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer any questions.
