How Do I Know Whether My Child Needs Braces?

Not all malocclusions are obvious to the casual observer. A child's teeth may appear normal to the parent, but discrepencies may still exist in their occlusion (bit). Only a trained professional can detect these often subtle problems, and treat or refer the patient to a specialist.

All children should be examined at least by the age of 4 years. Some problems can be diagnosed at a very early age and even corrected before the permanent teeth erupt. The benefits of early treatment include quicker results, less expense, and less chance of a relapse. The dentist can take advantage of the child's growth pattern to help accomplish the goal. Malocclusion is not simply a cosmetic issue, it creates functional problems as well. Therefore it is possible to avoid more serious complications or disfigurement, and enjoy the benefits for a lifetime.
