How Can I Improve My Smile?

Many people are self-conscious about the appearance of their teeth. This creates somewhat of a social handicap, resulting in embarrassment and loss of self-esteem. But, with today’s modern dental technology there is no need to suffer with this problem.

There are many means of improving the appearance of a person’s teeth, ranging from conservative to extreme makeovers. It is a fact that our teeth darken with age, and this can be reversed with the various bleaching methods available. There are clinical office procedures to achieve this, as well as some very effective and affordable over-the-counter products.

Older resin fillings may discolor over time, contrasting with the tooth’s enamel. These restorations may be replaced with newer-generation materials, which are virtually undetectable. There may be gaps between the teeth(diastemas) that are undesirable visually, and this situation is easily improved with cosmetic bonding, which is a simple, painless, non-invasive procedure.

In more severe cases of discoloration, the entire facing of the tooth may be concealed with a porcelain veneer, which is an eggshell-thin layer of porcelain, which is bonded to the enamel, yielding excellent cosmetic results. Teeth which are badly broken down structurally may require crowns, or “caps” to restore function and appearance. Missing teeth are easily replaced with either fixed or removable bridgework, or implants. Also, older crowns and bridges may need to be replaced after many years in cases where the gums recede, exposing the metal margin of some of these restorations. Now there are all-ceramic prostheses available, which have no visible margin.

One very common problem is malocclusions, or incorrect bite. This is frequently a functional as well as a cosmetic issue. The specialty field of orthodontics is the answer to correct this condition that many people suffer from, and unlike many years ago, it is becoming commonplace for adults to seek treatment as well as children.

In summary, there are a multitude of opportunities for individuals to correct and improve their teeth’s appearance and functions. The benefits of treatment will have a profound effect on a person’s well-being and quality of life.
