Dental Complications

Most people do not realize the degree of complications which can arise from dental pathology. In extreme cases, infections resulting from tooth decay or gum disease can end up in a life-threatening situation. Infections of gum tissues surrounding wisdom teeth, and abcesses secondary to traumatic injuries have the same potential. Although these cases are rare, it is very commonplace for people to suffer much pain, inconvenience, and financial impact from neglected dental problems.

Most infections are self-limiting, but some may become quite severe, resulting in a trip to the hospital. Patients may require an IV antibiotic or even admission to cure the problem. It is possible for dental infections to spread to the sinuses, the brain, or descend into the chest cavity and even death may occur.

A person's general health and well-being will be affected by neglecting their teeth, since abscessed teeth or infected gum tissue continually seed the bloodstream with pathological bacteria. Individuals who have artificial joints, such as hips or knees are particularly at risk. They may develop satellite infections around these prosthetic replacements. People with heart murmurs or a history of rheumatic fever can develop infections within the heart itself. Also, there is a correlation between periodontitis (gum disease) and heart disease.

It makes good sense to have a person's oral health evaluated on a regular basis to ensure that these previous episodes do not occur. Also, minor issues can be treated more conservatively causing less inconvenience and financial drain. Our teeth deserve the same care and respect as the rest of our body.
